The UBC Conference on Daoist Studies will be held primarily in
the Liu Centre.
Surrounded by lush forestland, the Institute is based in an award
winning building designed by Architectura in association with famed
architect Arthur Erickson. The building itself is designed to symbolize
the spirit of globalization and is a model of energy efficiency
and sustainability. Constructed on the site of Pan-Hellenic House,
the centre contains the former building's beams and other major
components. It incorporates fly ash--normally a waste product of
burning coal and a long list of other environmentally friendly features.
The Liu Institute for Global Issues pursues policy-relevant research
on emerging issues that demand innovative, interdisciplinary, and
impact-oriented responses from the academic community. A hallmark
of the Liu Institute’s approach is bridging the gap between
academia and practitioners. As a result, faculty and staff engage
in both the policy development process and action on the ground.
Through its publications, teaching, engagement in the policy process
and links to practitioners, the Liu Institute seeks to improve knowledge,
facilitate dialogue and information sharing and act as a catalyst
for change.
